With Business School candidates taking the GMAT Focus Edition, some myths have emerged regarding the new score scale. At our Prep Center, we want our students to be thoroughly informed and prepared. Thus, we shed some light on the truth behind some of the most common GMAT Focus myths, according to GMAC!
Myth #1: It’s Harder to Achieve a Higher Score
Fact: Achieving higher scores on the GMAT Focus Edition is not inherently more difficult than on the previous version of the GMAT. In other words, the scoring scale has been adjusted to guarantee a fair assessment of candidates, promoting an equitable platform for all applicants across both exam versions.
For instance, a score of 645 on the GMAT Focus Edition is equivalent to 700 on the previous scale, both representing the 86th percentile. Despite numerical differences, the performance level remains consistent. The key takeaway is that a competitive score is not exclusively determined by a specific numerical value. Achieving a score above 545 on the GMAT Focus places you at or above the 50th percentile, indicating a strong performance compared to peers. Your ranking will be explicitly outlined on both your unofficial and Official Score Report.
Myth #2: Business Schools Aren’t Aware of Score Scale Changes
Fact: GMAC has collaborated extensively with Business Schools worldwide, ensuring that admissions teams understand and fairly compare performances on both GMAT versions. Equipped with essential tools and training, these teams discern differences, receive in-depth guidance on the updated score scale, and make fair comparisons.
Myth #3: Schools Prefer Previous Scores
Fact: Business schools don’t have a preference between GMAT versions. What matters most is a candidate’s best performance, regardless of the GMAT version they choose. After all, a strong score, from either version, significantly improves your acceptance prospects.
