The IELTS is a certification of English language proficiency (English qualification) and is required by almost all English-taught undergraduate and postgraduate programs internationally. Universities use it as an assurance of the candidate’s ability to cope with the academic program. Additionally, the IELTS test may be required for employment in countries where English is the primary language.
Although most of us hold English degrees of B2 (lower) or C2 (Proficiency) levels, if they were not obtained within 2 years from the start of the program, they are considered expired. In other words, universities want to assess the candidate’s English language skills when they apply for a position in the program.
The candidate needs to achieve the minimum IELTS score required by each program, and special attention should be given to the subscores. Furthermore, the IELTS exam is available in either a written (paper-based) or computer-based format at the testing center.

IELTS test structure
The British Council is the administering body for IELTS in Greece and, thus, conducts the IELTS examinations.
The test consists of 4 sections: Reading, Listening, Writing, and Speaking. Each section is scored on a scale of 1 to 9. An overall score is derived as the average of the 4 scores. Universities or employers typically set minimum scores for both the overall score and the individual subscores.
A crucial factor is the limited time candidates have to respond to each section separately, which is why IELTS differs significantly from traditional English qualifications.
