The IELTS test is one of the most widely accepted English language qualifications, especially for undergraduate and postgraduate studies in Europe. Universities use it to ensure that applicants are ready for the academic workload, which is why your IELTS score has to be up to date. Let’s take a closer look at how the IELTS exams work!
How difficult is the IELTS
The IELTS test can be challenging. It requires at least an upper-intermediate level of English (B2), and each section (Reading, Listening, Writing, and Speaking) is strictly timed. With proper preparation and regular practice, you can learn how to manage your time and tackle each part with confidence.
Top IELTS score
Each section of the IELTS exam is graded on a scale from 1 to 9, and your overall IELTS score is the average of all four sections. Every university sets its own minimum score requirements, so it’s important to aim higher than that to maximize your chances of getting accepted. Most programs ask for at least a 7.0 overall on the IELTS test.

IELTS Exams
There are three ways to take the IELTS exam:
- IELTS on Paper: This is the traditional format, where you take the test in person and on paper at a test center. Test dates are usually available 2-3 times per month, and results are released in about 13 days. The Speaking test is done face-to-face, either on the same day or a different one.
- IELTS on Computer: You still take the test in person, but on a computer at the test center. Sessions are much more frequent, usually 2-3 times per week, and you get your results in just 2-4 days. The Speaking part is also done in person with an examiner, just as in the paper-based version.
- IELTS Online: This option lets you take the test from home, using your computer. It’s available very often, and results come out quickly, similar to the computer-based version. The Speaking section is done via webcam with a real examiner.
The IELTS cost for any IELTS test format is €225. One major benefit of the IELTS on Computer version is the IELTS One Skill Retake. If you’re not happy with your score in one section, you don’t need to retake the whole test – you can retake just that part. You’ll get a new IELTS score report and can choose whether to use your original score or the updated one. Lastly, your IELTS results are valid for 2 years.
