IELTS or TOEFL: Which English Qualification Should You Choose?

An official English language certification is a fundamental requirement for studying abroad, postgraduate programs, employment, and immigration. The two most widely recognized English tests worldwide are IELTS and TOEFL.

But which one is the right choice for you?

What Is IELTS Academic

IELTS Academic is one of the most widely recognized English language proficiency exams for academic studies and is designed for candidates who wish to study at universities and higher education institutions abroad. The exam evaluates all four core language skills—Listening, Reading, Writing, and Speaking—providing a complete picture of the candidate’s language proficiency.

The test consists of these four sections, and scoring is based on a Band Score from 0 to 9, both overall and per skill. IELTS Academic is internationally recognized and can be taken either in paper-based or computer-based format, offering flexibility in the way the exam is delivered.

What Is TOEFL iBT

TOEFL iBT is an internationally recognized English language proficiency exam primarily designed for candidates who are interested in academic studies abroad. It assesses all four core language skills—Reading, Listening, Speaking, and Writing—through a fully computer-based testing environment.

The exam is administered at certified test centers worldwide and is also available in an at-home version (TOEFL Home Edition). From January 21, 2026, new TOEFL iBT enters a new era with a redesigned format, featuring adaptive (multistage) testing in the Reading and Listening sections and a new 1–6 scoring scale aligned with the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR). The traditional 0–120 score scale will continue to be reported in parallel for the following two years.

At the same time, the overall test experience is being upgraded, including new headphones at test centers, faster score reporting (usually within approximately 72 hours), and new, updated preparation materials for candidates.

Following the new TOEFL iBT update, the new scoring system is designed to be more easily understood by universities worldwide, as it directly aligns with the CEFR. This significantly facilitates recognition and interpretation of results by academic institutions in many countries.

TOEFL is accepted worldwide by universities and academic programs across Europe, the United States, Canada, Asia, and many other regions.
