The IMAT (International Medical Admissions Test) is a written exam in English, required for admission to English-taught Medicine and Dentistry programs at public universities in Italy. It is a knowledge and skills-based test held once a year – in September – and covers science subjects, logical reasoning, and general knowledge.
More and more students are choosing Italy to study Medicine due to:
- The English-taught programs
- The degree’s recognition across Europe and globally
- The significantly lower cost compared to other countries such as Bulgaria or Romania
📚 What Does the IMAT Include?
The structure of the IMAT is as follows:
Section | Number of Questions |
---|---|
General Knowledge & Logical Reasoning | 20 |
Biology | 15 |
Chemistry | 15 |
Physics & Mathematics | 10 |
Total | 60 questions |
IMAT 2025 Exams
For 2025, the final details of the IMAT have not yet been officially confirmed by the Italian Ministry of Education (MUR). However, based on current information and past years, the following is expected:
- The exam date is estimated for mid-September 2025, with a provisional date of September 17
- Applications will be submitted through the Universitaly.it platform, expected to open at the end of June and close at the end of July
- The syllabus remains unchanged, focusing on Biology, Chemistry, Physics, Mathematics, Logical Reasoning, and Critical Thinking
- The number of places available for international candidates remains limited and varies by university
Competition & Score Thresholds
Due to rising demand in recent years, admission score thresholds have increased significantly. For example:
- The University of Pavia had a cutoff score of 47.2/90 in 2024
- Sapienza University of Rome exceeded 50/90, ranking it among the most competitive institutions
This means a high score is now essential for success, especially at prestigious universities.
IMAT Preparation
Proper and timely preparation is crucial, as candidates must manage:
- A wide syllabus (Biology, Chemistry, Physics, Mathematics, Critical Thinking)
- Time pressure during the exam
- English scientific terminology
- A limited number of available places
Students typically begin preparation in October of their final year of high school, or immediately after the Greek national exams, following structured programs that combine theory and intensive practice.
