Law in the United Kingdom with the LNAT

The LNAT (Law National Aptitude Test) is an aptitude test for undergraduate law programs in the United Kingdom. It is administered on a computer-based platform, and universities use it as a common measure to assess a candidate’s ability to study law at the undergraduate level, regardless of their education or personal background.

The LNAT test requires specific skills needed by students to succeed in law programs. It is used alongside conventional assessment methods such as A Levels scores (or their equivalents), university applications, and interviews. Essentially, the LNAT evaluates Verbal Reasoning skills (comprehension, interpretation, analysis, synthesis, induction, deduction).

Koutsodontis Prep Center, with experience since 1981, provides successful preparation for the LNAT and support services for application submission through the respective admissions service.

Structure of the LNAT Test

The LNAT consists of 2 parts, each with separate time allocation:

Section What it assessesQuestionsTimeScore
AThe ability to focus on details and make conclusions without haste4295 minutes0 – 42
BThe ability of candidates to argue economically and come to a conclusionEssay40 minutes

Section A consists of multiple-choice questions based on 12 texts. Candidates read text excerpts and answer comprehension questions. The most common types of questions include:

  • Argument analysis questions
  • Information analysis and interpretation questions
  • Literary and linguistic reasoning questions

Answers are computer-checked, resulting in the so-called LNAT score.

In Section B, candidates write an essay, selecting one of three proposed topics. This part is not graded by the examination center and does not contribute to the LNAT score. However, it provides students with the opportunity to construct an argument and reach a conclusion.

LNAT Universities

The universities that require the LNAT as an admission requirement are:

  • University of Bristol
  • University of Cambridge
  • Durham University
  • University of Glasgow
  • King’s College London
  • London School of Economics
  • University of Oxford
  • SOAS University of London
  • University College London

LNAT Exams

LNAT examinations are held from September of the previous year to June of the same year as the desired program start date. Therefore, those wishing to study in 2025 must take the test from September 2024 to June 2025. Additionally, it is possible to take the exam one year and gain admission the next, known as deferred entry.

Candidates take the exams only once a year but can take the test multiple times in separate years. They take the tests at Pearson VUE examination centers, and their scores are available to universities within 24 hours. However, candidates can view their scores twice a year:

Those who took the test by January 26 receive their scores in February. Those who took the test later receive their scores in August. Furthermore, the LNAT sends scores directly to the chosen UK universities through the UCAS platform. It is essential for candidates to correctly fill out their information to ensure proper data matching for their chosen universities.

LNAT Dates

For 2024, the examination and deadline dates are as follows:

  • August 1, 2024: LNAT registrations begin – account creation
  • September 1, 2024: LNAT examinations begin

Each university sets its own deadline regarding when candidates must have taken the LNAT examinations. For example, the University of Cambridge and the University of Oxford usually require LNAT scores to be sent by October 15. Other universities may accept scores until January. International candidates may have a deadline until the end of July, but this depends on the universities. Therefore, students are advised to take the test as early in the year as possible!

LNAT Preparation

Every year, more than 7,000 students take the LNAT test. The competition is fierce, and the test itself is quite demanding as it assesses intellectual abilities rather than legal knowledge. Time management is crucial as the examination time is quite tight, and candidates must manage it properly.
