Preparation for Master’s Abroad

Studying for a Master’s degree abroad is a once-in-a-lifetime experience, with many Greek students opting for countries like the Netherlands, Italy, the UK, or even the USA. Proper research and preparation, however, are crucial steps that will shape your future.

At Koutsodontis Prep Center, we specialize in the preparation for English-taught Master’s programs for over 40 years. More than 36,000 of our graduates have been accepted into top universities in the world!

To help you on this journey, we’ve created a concise guide outlining the steps for proper preparation. You’ll also find many useful success tips based on our extensive experience!

Step 1: Choosing a Field of Study

Choosing your field of study is a very personal decision. Some students know exactly what they want, while others are still exploring, and new opportunities arise all the time.

Our advice is to stay as active as possible during your studies and seize opportunities! There are now plenty of workshops, networking events, soft skills programs, and internships available. You have countless opportunities to explore something new and network with people in your field. LinkedIn also offers a great platform to connect with professionals and gather valuable information.

We also host free Open Days for Master’s abroad, where you can get essential information to kickstart your journey. The next one will take place on Monday, December 2, 2024, so make sure to reserve your spot a few days in advance.

Step 2: Selecting a Master’s Program

Once you’ve chosen a field, the next step is to start looking for universities. You can explore university rankings like the QS Rankings, Financial Times (for Business Schools), and others.

We recommend checking out our detailed Study Guides! They give you a comprehensive overview of studies in each country and showcase the most popular universities. Learn about studies and Master’s programs in the Netherlands, Italy, the UK or the USA and begin your research!

On each university’s website, you can find the Master’s programs they offer, along with information on the curriculum, admission requirements, costs, scholarships, etc. Some websites are very user-friendly, while others may be a bit tricky—so be patient!

If you’d rather not conduct the search yourself, you can use our “Program Finder” service. Our Admissions Consultant will analyze your profile and prepare a tailored list of suggestions, which you can then discuss together.

Once you have chosen the Master’s programs you’re interested in, review their admission requirements and start your preparation as early as possible!

Step 3: IELTS or TOEFL Preparation

All English-taught Master’s programs abroad require proof of your English proficiency through IELTS or TOEFL exams. These tests measure your English level to ensure you can handle the program.

At our Prep Center, IELTS / TOEFL preparation is short and efficient, allowing you to take the exam immediately afterward. We provide all the necessary materials, personalized feedback, and from day one, you can contact your teachers via email. We focus especially on Writing and Speaking, as these tend to be the most challenging areas for students. You’ll also learn success tips and techniques for all parts of the exam.

Step 4: GMAT or GRE Preparation

Depending on your field of study, you may be required to take the GMAT or GRE. Generally speaking:

  • The GMAT is for Business Schools, covering programs like MBA, Management, Finance, and related fields.
  • The GRE is for Engineering, and STEM studies in general, certain Humanities programs, or PhDs.

Each program’s website will indicate whether a GMAT/GRE is required and the minimum score you need to qualify.

Why are GMAT/GRE scores important?
These tests assess your quantitative, verbal, and analytical skills, showing how ready you are for the program and whether you can handle its high demands.

Our GMAT and GRE preparation courses at Koutsodontis Prep Center are unique in Greece. We provide methods and techniques to help you answer questions within the roughly 2-minute limit per question. Our material is carefully structured with practice tests and theory, allowing you to gradually get into the mindset of the test and understand how to approach it. In addition to the official GMAT/GRE tests from the exam providers, we also offer our own simulation tests. These use an algorithm that we continuously refine, giving remarkably accurate predictions of your actual score!

This way, you’ll be fully prepared in a short time and succeed on your first attempt.

Step 5: Preparing Your Applications

Once you’ve finished the tests, it’s time to complete your applications. Each university has its own admission requirements, but generally, they all require an official translation of your degree and transcripts, a CV, and a Personal Statement.

Some programs may require specific ECTS credits in certain subjects, while others place more importance on grades. Some also have their own templates or essay questions that need to be addressed. Although time-consuming, these steps are critical for evaluation of your application by the Admissions Office.

Koutsodontis Tips

  • Our experience shows that it’s best to start researching Master’s programs abroad as early as possible. This way, you’ll have the chance to significantly enhance your CV, especially if you’re considering competitive programs.
  • We have been successfully preparing students for IELTS, TOEFL, GMAT, and GRE for over 40 years. Our students achieve outstanding scores both in Greece and internationally, with many gaining admission to top universities. Stick to our program, stay consistent, and you’ll succeed on your first try!
  • Begin the preparation for your Master’s programs about a year before your application deadlines. This will give you enough time to organize and complete the required courses. Additionally, you’ll have time to work on your applications without feeling rushed, which will help reduce stress. Plus, the earlier you start, the more program options you’ll have.
  • Apply to at least 4-5 universities. Don’t limit yourself to just 1 or 2, as rejection could mean losing an entire year. But don’t overdo it either—applying to too many can become overwhelming and costly due to application fees.
