Personal Statement Tips
One of the prerequisites for admission to a postgraduate program abroad is the preparation of a motivational letter / personal statement. This is a letter, usually from 500 to 1200 words *, which is the student’s first contact with the university of his/her choice. The student is asked to introduce himself / herself, stating the reasons he / she chose the specific program / university, his / her goals, as well as his / her academic or professional achievements. Explore some useful personal statement tips.
Ideas to get started:
- Mention clear motivations and specific reasons on why you want to participate in this program.
- Carefully read the study guide and course descriptions to determine the knowledge and experience required. Next, through targeted examples, refer to how you meet these required criteria.
- Think about what makes you the right choice (personal branding) – this could be either your relevant experience or the skills you have acquired from education, work or other activities (music, art, sports, volunteering, etc.)
- Research the career prospects of the program and the vocational rehabilitation of graduates (labor market relations, list of companies and organizations that employ graduates).
The personal statement is your opportunity to “connect” with the university and a key element for a successful application. That’s why it’s important to start preparing early, in order to highlight in the right way all the features that will set you apart from the other candidates.
* The requirements depend on the country and the university, so for more details you need to consult the university’s website.
