For many students, studying abroad remains a long-held dream. However, with rising tuition fees at top universities and increasing living expenses in major cities like New York, London, and Zurich, scholarships for Greek students have become more important than ever. These financial aids are now a key factor in making international studies accessible, turning higher education into a major investment for both students and their families.
There are several types of scholarships depending on the level of study, the destination country, and the institution offering them. Whether you are aiming for undergraduate or postgraduate studies, many universities and organizations provide funding opportunities tailored to international students.
Let’s take a closer look at the basic requirements for scholarships for Greek students in Europe and the United States, both at the Bachelor’s and Master’s level.
Scholarships for Bachelor’s Degrees abroad
In recent years, more and more Greek students have begun their academic journey overseas. Many universities, as well as independent organizations, now offer merit-based scholarships, especially at the undergraduate level. These scholarships are typically awarded to students with a strong academic profile who stand out from the competition.
In the United States, athletic scholarships are also a well-established way for universities to attract talented students from around the world. These scholarships reward not only academic ability but also performance in sports such as basketball, tennis, and swimming.
To apply to American universities, students are required to take the SAT exam. A high SAT score is crucial, especially when applying for scholarships at prestigious institutions like those in the Ivy League. For athletic scholarships, SAT results are still required, but athletic achievements and competitive performance also play a major role in the selection process.
Here are the most common requirements for undergraduate scholarship applications:
- High SAT Score: Most U.S. universities and even top European institutions, such as Bocconi University, require a strong SAT result, especially for merit-based or competitive scholarships.
- High School Diploma: Universities evaluate your overall academic performance and a strong high school transcript is usually a basic requirement.
- English Language Proficiency Certificate: IELTS or TOEFL scores are commonly required for English-taught programs.
- Extracurricular Activities: Volunteering, leadership roles, and awards in competitions can significantly strengthen your application and show that you’re a well-rounded candidate.
- Letters of Recommendation from teachers.
- Personal Statement: A compelling essay that explains why you’re applying for the program, your goals, and why you deserve the scholarship.
- Curriculum Vitae (CV)

Scholarships for Master’s Degrees abroad
Many students continue to pursue postgraduate studies at top universities around the world. However, competition for scholarships for Greek students at the Master’s level can be intense. Once again, universities offer merit-based scholarships, but your field of study plays a significant role.
In general, programs offered by business schools, such as MBA and degrees in economics, typically require the GMAT. On the other hand, STEM programs (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics) often ask for the GRE, especially in the U.S. and particularly for doctoral (PhD) programs.
To pursue scholarships at the Master’s level you’ll generally need to meet the following criteria:
- Competitive GMAT or GRE score, even if the test is listed as optional for the program.
- Strong undergraduate academic performance, usually with a GPA above 8 or 8.5 out of 10, along with a full transcript.
- English Language Proficiency Certificate: IELTS or TOEFL scores are commonly required for English-taught programs.
- Extracurricular Activities & Work Experience: Volunteering, leadership roles, Erasmus program, and internships with companies are highly valued and can make your profile stand out.
- Letters of Recommendation from professors and/or employers.
- Personal Statement: A compelling essay outlining your motivation, career goals, and why you are a strong fit for the program.
- Curriculum Vitae (CV).
