TOEFL for Studies & Employment

The TOEFL is a certification of English language proficiency (English qualification) and is required by almost all English-taught undergraduate and postgraduate programs internationally. Universities use it as an assurance of the candidate’s ability to cope with the academic program. Additionally, the TOEFL test may be required for employment in countries where English is the primary language.

Although most of us hold English degrees of B2 (lower) or C2 (Proficiency) levels, if they were not obtained within 2 years from the start of the program, they are considered expired. In other words, universities want to assess the candidate’s English language skills when they apply for a position in the program.

The candidate needs to achieve the minimum TOEFL score required by each program. Special attention should be given to the subscores. Furthermore, the TOEFL exam is either paper-based or computer-based at the testing center or at home.

FAQ: What TOEFL score may be required?

Each university sets its own minimum scores as prerequisites for admission to an undergraduate or postgraduate program.

TOEFL test structure

ETS is the organization that created and administers the TOEFL, so its exams are defined and regulated through this organization.

The test consists of 4 sections (Reading, Listening, Writing, Speaking), each scored on a scale of 0-30, and a total score is calculated as the sum of the 4 scores. Universities or employers usually set minimum scores for both the total score and the individual subscores. A significant factor is the limited time candidates have to answer each section separately, which is why the TOEFL differs significantly from traditional English proficiency exams.

Changes in the TOEFL Exam

Starting from July 26, 2023 the TOEFL test undergoes significant changes. For example, the duration of the test will be reduced by almost 1 hour. Moreover, the test will be adapted to the requirements of universities and the registration process will be more user-friendly.
