UCAS Clearing

What is Clearing?

Clearing is the way universities fill vacancies that they still have in their programs. Students can use the clearing process when:

  • Applying to universities in England after 30 June.
  • They did not accept an offer from a university or they received one but they do not want to go there anymore
  • They do not meet the admission requirements of the university of their choice.

Application via UCAS.

If the student has applied through the UCAS platform, then the Track your Application section will indicate that he/she is in clearing or that the clearing process has started and he/she has been given a personal clearing number. All available program positions are announced on the UCAS page, which is constantly updated by universities.

The students should therefore contact the universities or colleges directly, indicating their personal clearing number and ID, to identify their application and see if they will be offered one of the available vacancies in the programs that interest them. The clearing starts on July 5 and ends on October 19.

Tips for the Clearing process.

The student can reach as many universities as he/she wishes by phone or email, but can only state one option to UCAS. Therefore, it is preferable for the student not to declare a program before first contacting the university. If the university has not asked the student to apply, it is likely to reject it and until the student is rejected, he/she cannot declare another program.

It is worth noting that the student may need to have a short telephone interview when calling the university to find out about the availability of places.
